No longer the “longest, wickedest street in America”
Playboy magazine once reputedly referred to Colfax as the ‘longest, wickedest street in America.” In reality, Colfax is only 26.8 miles long, and has come a long way in recent years, (mostly) dropping its wicked reputation.
If you’re new to the area, or just stopping in Denver for a couple of days, give Colfax a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by this off-the-beaten-path area and unique day in Denver itinerary. Below are several things you can do on Colfax.
Buy a vintage record
Stop by Twist and Shout for a trip down memory lane. This vintage shop has everything a music lover could ever need, including records, band tees, vintage posters and occasional live music.
Stop at the farmers’ market
The City Park Esplanade Fresh Market is conveniently located in the semi-circle at 2504 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80206. I love that this market has a beautiful fountain and manicured lawn nearby – perfect for lying in the grass and enjoying your homemade treats. Open Sundays, June 4–Oct. 29, 2017, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Stroll through a book store
Tattered Cover is one of the largest independent book stores in the United States. One of my favorite things about Tattered Cover is the numerous nooks that can be found around the store to sit and enjoy a good book, study, or sip some coffee and have a quiet conversation.
Grab some tacos
We stopped at Tacos Tequila Whiskey to meet our friends for some food and drinks. I’m a big fan of their happy hour — $2 for Sesión Cerveza, Tecate, or Modelo Especial and $5 for Sesíon Cerveza with choice of WL Weller OR Maestro Dobel Diamante. Plus, their tacos are to die for.
Attend a concert
This crappy photo I took of The Fillmore Auditorium does not do this concert venue justice. The building was first built in 1905 and has hosted live bands since 1999. For a list of upcoming shows, visit their website.
Play a vintage arcade game
Fans of classic arcade games, pinball machines, Skee-Ball and Giant Jenga rejoice — The 1up has everything you need for a nostalgic evening. This large arcade bar is ideal for a fun evening out in the city. Don’t forget your quarters!
Open 24-hours, Voodoo Doughnut is a must-see for locals and visitors alike. Featuring a variety of doughnuts, (including my favorite — the classic Voodoo Doll, with a pretzel stick stabbed through the chest) Voodoo Doughnut has something for everyone, even vegans!
For years, Colfax has had a poor reputation for being dangerous and rundown. Fortunately, Denver is investing money and time into the area and there is now a wide range of things to do along the Colfax strip.
