26 Things I’ve Learned In 26 Years

Today is my 26th birthday. I am officially closer to 30 than I am to 20. Yippee! 

Now that I am past a quarter of a century, I’m offering up some words of advice. These are the valuable things I’ve learned during my many years on earth. Mostly, they’re things that my mom told me when I was young that she was totally right about.

  1. Plan small day trips or weekend getaways throughout the year. You don’t need to use vacation time to get some R&R.  
  2. Don’t chase friendships. People grow apart. If your friends stop responding it’s time for you to move on.
  3. When you get home, ask your significant other about their day. Listen well, remember the names of their co-workers and the big projects they’re working on.
  4. Spend quality time with people. Be in the moment. Put down your phone and turn off the TV.
  5. Learn how to cook while you’re young. Don’t rely on processed food. Have at least 10 go-to healthy, affordable recipes that you enjoy making.

  7. Take tons of photos but only post 10% to social media. You’ll want those memories, but the world doesn’t need to see every detail of your life.
  8. Take the time to give a good hug. You never know when it’ll be the last time you see someone.
  9. Take care of your teeth. Brush, floss and use mouth wash. If you have a retainer, wear it every night.
  10. Always greet people by using their name. Not saying their name makes them worry that you don’t know who they are. It also comes across as impersonal. 
  11. If you have to smoke or drink to have fun with your friends, they aren’t your real friends.
  12. Each day, create a to-do list with three things that you need to accomplish.
  13. When you notice something you like about someone, tell them. Whether it be their clothes, their attitude, or the way they’re handling a task, tell them. Make their day.
  14. Drop toxic people. Whether it be family or friends, if people bring out the worst in you distance yourself from them.
  15. Before you share something with the world, ask yourself how your grandparents, boss and niece would feel about it. If you’d feel embarrassed for one them to see it, don’t share it.
  16. Buy triple milled soap. It costs a few dollars more than regular soap and lasts 10x longer.
  17. Find three hobbies you love: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative.
  18. Properly introduce people to each other. Don’t make your friend stand awkwardly beside you as you talk to someone they don’t know.
  19. Wine before liquor, you’ve never been sicker. Don’t drink wine with any other type of alcohol.
  20. Step on the crunchy leaves. It’s an excellent stress reliever.
  21. Quality over quantity. Craving something sweet? Get the best of the best and have very little rather than binging on junk.
  22. Have a go-to well drink at the bar. Think gin and tonic, whiskey coke, etc. It makes going out for drinks a lot cheaper, especially during happy hour!
  23. Learn how to pack everything you need for a trip in a backpack. Anything beyond that is a luxury.
  24. Go somewhere you’ve never been at least once a year.
  25. If you’re shy, ask people about themselves. They’ll do all the talking and you’ll have time to get more comfortable with them.
  26. Support your loved ones wholeheartedly in their ventures and dreams. Help others succeed. Their success will not limit yours.

My goal for the next year is to strengthen my relationships with friends and family. For years I have had dozens of acquaintances and very few real friends. I’m hoping to change that.
